How To Use Your Bullet Journal To Set (And Keep) New Year’s Resolutions

Setting New Year’s Resolutions is a great way to kick start your year! Big or small, your New Year’s resolutions can help you accomplish amazing things throughout your year. Your Bullet Journal is a great place to brainstorm all the ideas floating around in your head!

So, how can you use your Bullet Journal to set and keep your New Year’s resolutions?

The first step is to create a layout where you can brainstorm all of your different ideas!

Next, you can create different collections that can help you work towards keeping your resolutions alive all year long!

In this blog post, I have shared different ideas and inspiration for you to get started with. Let’s jump right in!

Creating Your New Year’s Resolutions Bullet Journal Layout

For something like New Year’s resolutions, I love to use a very plain and simple Bullet Journal layout. This is so that I have lots of room to brainstorm ideas, add doodles, and make it feel exciting as I fill it all in. I also like to use a full 2 page spread for this.

Start by writing your header along the top of your spread.

Next, start your decorating by creating a pretty header doodle. I have used little leaves on my 2021 layout, but you can doodle anything you might like!

Setting Your New Year’s Resolutions

Before we jump into brainstorming your ideas in your Bullet Journal, I wanted to take a moment to chat about my top 3 tips for setting resolutions! If you already know how you like to set your resolutions, feel free to jump ahead to where you fill in your layout!

Some people think of setting resolutions like setting goals. Personally, I prefer to think of setting resolutions as small, personal things I can do throughout the year that could help me towards my bigger goals, establish better routines, improve self care, etc. Whatever approach you prefer to take when brainstorming your own resolutions, there are 3 important things to keep in mind!

Limit How Many Resolutions You Set

I know it is tempting to want to write down every small thing you can think of, but that is not the best way to set yourself up for success!

Limit your resolutions to however many you know in your heart you can reasonably accomplish.

If you find yourself setting too many, try setting just one small resolution in each category of your life. This can help you to narrow down on how many you are setting, but also help you to ensure you are focusing on each are of your life! Here are some general category ideas that you can use:

  • Health & Fitness
  • Financial
  • Relationships
  • Family
  • Career/Business
  • School
  • Personal Development
  • Self Care
  • Community/Giving
  • Faith
  • Fun & Recreation

Know Why The Resolution Is Important To You

Whenever you set any kind of goal or resolution, always know why that resolution is important to you! Knowing your why can help you to stay motivated, overcome roadblocks or challenges, and keep you inspired!

Each time you brainstorm a resolution, I want you to ask yourself:

  • Why is this resolution important to me?
  • How will accomplishing this resolution improve my life?

If you find a resolution that feels extremely important to you, then you know that is a perfect resolution to set!

Be Specific

It’s important to still be specific, even with your resolutions! Being specific will help you have something specific to work towards all year.

For example, do you see the difference between “Read more books” and “Read 12 books throughout the year”. The first one does not give you anything specific to aspire to or work towards.

Those are my top 3 tips for coming up with your resolutions! Now it is time to start brainstorming your different ideas in your Bullet Journal!

How To Fill In Your New Year’s Resolution Bullet Journal Layout

Now that you know how to set resolutions, it is time to fill in the layout you created earlier! This is where the fun really begins!

For this step, I want to encourage you to create an environment where you can relax and enjoy the process of filling in your layout! Put on some comfy clothes. Light a candle. Grab your favourite beverage and get cozy!

Let’s get started!

Step One: Write down your ideas!

The first step is to just start writing down your ideas! Grab your favourite pens, markers, highlighters, and just start writing!

You can do this directly in your Bullet Journal, or you can do it on a spare sheet of paper first if you want to make sure you have a good balance of resolutions!

I like to make sure that I have at least one resolution included in each category of my life. This helps to ensure that I am focusing on improving every area of my life. For ideas on different life categories you can use, go here!

Step Two: Add some doodles!

Doodles can be a really great way to add some creativity to this process! Your doodles can be really simple like mine are, or you can go all out! Just promise me you won’t get overwhelmed by this. This layout is meant to motivate and inspire you! Only you have to see it, so don’t be afraid to get creative!

Step Three: Add some photos, stickers or stamps!

Doodles are not the only way to get creative in your Bullet Journal. You can also add photos for inspiration, or use stamps and stickers to decorate your layouts even further!

Once you are happy with your layout, you are done the first step! I would also like to note that there is no right or wrong way to fill in your layout! As long as you can use your layout to dream and plan, then you are doing it right!

How To Use Bullet Journal Collections For Your New Year’s Resolutions

Writing down your resolutions in your journal is just one small thing that you can do. If you want to take this a step further, I would highly recommend adding some resolution-related collections to your Bullet Journal too! Collections can help you to plan out how you are going to work towards your goal and track your results!

Using Collections To Create Mini Action Plans

One way that collections can help you is to create mini action plans for your resolutions. This is essentially how you plan to work towards your desired results.

For example, if one of your resolutions is try one new meal per week, then you could create a collection dedicated to finding new meals to try! Take a peek at the layout I am using below. I have a space for the name of the recipe, a spot to rate it out of five, and a spot to write down the source so that I know where to look for it.

If one of your New Year's Resolutions is to eat healthy or try new recipes, then definitely try this layout! It is very motivating when you get to have fun trying new recipes!

This collection helps me create a mini action plan. The layout is filled with meal ideas to try, so when I am ready to try something new, I have all these incredible ideas at my fingertips.

This idea could be applied to any resolution you set! Get creative in how you are going to implement your resolutions!

Use Collections To Track Your Results

Trackers will help you physically see the progress you are making, which makes them a great layout to include in your Bullet Journal!

For example, if one of your resolutions is to save $6,000 over the next twelve months, then you could create a tracker collection dedicated to helping you stay on track with your savings goal and track your progress! Take a peek at some great ‘Savings Tracker’ layout ideas found on Instagram!

Trackers can be used with so many different resolutions! If you want to read every day, create a tracker where you can track how many pages you read each day. If you want to eat at least one healthy meal per day, you could try starting a meal log!

Trackers are extremely versatile, so don’t be afraid to experiment! You could have an entire layout dedicated to what you are tracking, but you can also include trackers on your monthly and weekly layouts! Create The ‘One Task A Day’ Layout

I created this layout in 2020, and I have been using it every month since! I absolutely LOVE it!

The basic idea behind it is to help you choose one small task you can do each day that will get you one step closer towards achieving the results you want to see from your resolutions or goals!

Collections and trackers like this can really help you plan out your goals and track your results. This will help keep you on track for your New Year's Resolutions!

On the left page is where I plan out what I want to focus on for the month. In this example, we are focusing on my resolution to exercise daily, so you will see that I have all my different exercises planned out on this page.

On the right page is where I plan what I am going to do for exercise each day of the month. I will write out my exercise plan for each day taking inspiration from the ideas on the left page!

This layout has been absolutely amazing in helping me work towards my resolutions and goals! I am very limited for time, so being able to focus on just one small thing per day really helps me compartmentalize my goals! Now I have the time to focus on the goals that I want to focus on!

I would definitely recommend trying this layout for at least one month to see if it will work for you too!
